Kristin Dwyer, director. REVIEW Carr’s vignettes are closely interwoven . . . His gift for vivid characterization and for creating a concrete sense of time and place enchants. The cast is uniformly excellent. Director Kristin Dwyer’s choice to stage The Wakeville Stories in the Somerville Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery (for selected performances) may look unconventional, but . . . the graveyard makes an apt setting for Carr’s moving dramatization of issues dealing with war, death, and the responsibilities of the living. Upcoming Readings,Workshops, and Publications: Published: Traverse: Carr/Boothe, an art/literary exchange of word and image. Published by LIghtwoodpress. A limited edition of 44 copies. Paradise Loft, poems by Laurence Carr, Published by CAPS Press and Lightwood Press. Paradise Loft is a collection that explores time. The poems are arranged into eleven sections beginning with a prologue: “God’s Diary/Day 5”, a timeless timeframe. It is followed by “Wording/Morning”, thoughts on morning writing; “Journeyman I”, a sequence of time-travels; “Feline Dreams” on the afterlives of cats, ending with the mid-20th century romance, “The Ballad of Henrietta Pussycat and Her Lover Thief Coyote.” Next, “Even She” are studies, much like an artist might keep in a sketchbook. The prose poems in “time past” bring up collected memories that have lingered long enough to record. “Journeyman II” continues the time-travels, and “Wording/ Evening” shows the end of day grasping at end of day thoughts. The book closes with “in time” with Spanish translations by Leticia Ortega Cortes; seven dreamscapes conjure themselves between two and seven A.M. and bring on a new beginning. Limerickle: a fantasy play for young audiences based on the writings of Edward Lear, who wrote "The Owl and the Pussycat" and other poems, limericks and stories. The play was created by Carr and Bruce Cornwell. Published by Big Dog Publishing, Rapid City, SD. Published: Reflecting Pool: Poets and the Creative Process, edited by Laurence Carr, published by Codhill Press. Awarded FINALIST in the 2019 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. 25 Poets share ideas about nurturing poets in their classrooms and writing workshops. Including exercises and poems by the writers, this is a fine book to read and to teach the writing of poetry. Published: Kennedy at Colonus: The Journey of Robert F. Kennedy, a play in 2 acts has been published as an ebook (eplay) by Lightwood Press. It's available for download for $5.99 from all the major vendors (Amazon, B&N etc.) Takes the reader through the turbulent 60s through the life of one of America's most important political figures. Threnodies: poems in remembrance published by Codhill Press (65 pp.); available in bookstores and through Amazon. $16.00 REVIEW Even if Threnodies was half its length, we would be holding a beautiful testament in our hands. That Carr has freely given us such a resonant abundance of humility, fragility, wit, and insight testifies not only to our common goodness and ground, but his deep understanding of it. - Mike Jurkovic, smitten by harpies, shiny banjo catfish, President, Calling All Poets, New Paltz, NY. |
